The trail of America's childhood obesity crisis may be littered with fast food wrappers, soda cans and video games.

The path toward a local solution is packed with soil and lined with trees, creeks and wildlife, said Paul Gehring, director of Spotsylvania County's YMCA.

Gehring spoke last night to the Spotsylvania County Board of Supervisors during a public hearing on a plan to add nearly 100 miles of trails. He talked about the health benefits of adding paths.

"It will encourage families to recreate by giving them safe places to walk, run or ride bicycles," he said.

Spotsylvania County residents have until Wednesday to let planners know of concerns or comments on a proposal to create a comprehensive trail network.

County planners revealed a draft master plan for this trail network for cyclists, runners, walkers --and potentially horseback riders--at a community meeting last week. The long-term plan proposes about 83 miles of trails and provides the framework for an extensive network that connects historic sites with neighborhoods and rivers.

About 40 people--mostly equestrians--attended the community meeting last week at the new county office building in Courthouse Village.

Area residents say they don't bike or walk as much as they'd like because there aren't enough trails and connecting paths, according to a survey conducted this summer by Spotsylvania County.

Now, the Planning Department has joined forces with the Spotsylvania Greenways Initiative to complete a Trailways Master Plan.

Right now, Spotsylvania has about 22 miles of bike and fitness trails.

The county needs 104 more miles of trails to meet the parks and recreation guidelines outlined in its 2008 comprehensive plan.
